The endless rise of online poker
A recent survey found that 10 million people in America play online poker for money. The UK has 1.9 million real-money online poker players, Germany has 1.6 million, followed by France with 1.3 million and Scandinavia with 1.4 million players. These are pretty sizeable chunks of the population!
Whereas gambling was once frowned upon by polite society, nowadays liberals claim we have a right to gamble because the consumer is always rational. In most Western countries, gambling laws have been relaxed to accommodate this view in ways ranging from allowing bookmakers to open up their shop fronts to permitting poker in pubs (albeit for modest stakes).
